Monthly Meetings /
Socials
Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. If you`re a meat-eater seeking information about a healthier, more ethical way of life, please don`t feel nervous about attending - we don`t bite! Whether you`re a vegetarian, vegan, fruitarian, meat-eater or pescetarian(avoids meat but still eats fish), our meetings are a great way for all newcomers to get involved and meet other members. Meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month, from 7.30pm at St Georges Community Hall, St Georges Road, Redditch.( see map here )
Our meetings take many forms - we sometimes invite a guest speaker to talk about a particular topic of interest; occasionally there will be a cookery demonstration; we may show a short film; or sometimes we`ll have a `Bring & Share` vegan buffet. At all our meetings, we announce forthcoming events, arrange group meals out and discuss any current veggie/vegan news. For any meetings that may be of particular interest, we aim to announce details on our forthcoming events page, several weeks in advance.
We always display a wide range of informative leaflets, factsheets & magazines on many topics - nutrition, recipes, animal issues, environmental matters, local campaign groups etc. Refreshments are served from 7.15pm and we aim to start the meetings at 7.30pm (but often get delayed!). Although a talk, cookery demo, film etc may be over by 8.30pm, we often continue to socialise until 9.30pm or beyond.
We have been known to go out for a meal on the night of our normal meeting, so be sure to check our forthcoming events or contact us to confirm.
Local Meals
Out
Members of Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans go out for regular meals at local restaurants and pubs. Group meals are always well attended and are very enjoyable for all. It`s a great way to try out new food and ideal for socialising and getting to know likeminded veggie/vegans. Members meat-eating friends often join us, keen to sample delicious, healthy veggie/vegan food!
We aim to try new venues regularly, which helps to encourage them to cater well for veggie/vegans. Supporting local eateries in this way, has already resulted in them providing a better range of veggie friendly meals, and at least one now states as much in their adverts! The lack of good places to eat out is often the reason meat eaters don`t take the step towards a healthier veggie lifestyle, so we will continue to address this problem in Redditch and the surrounding area. (Please contact us if know a good, local veggie-friendly restaurant/pub that is not yet listed).
Why not join us?!
We welcome new diners, take a look at our forthcoming events to see if any meals are currently listed. If not, contact us and find out when we`ll next be going out.
A message to local restaurants and pubs
We would be delighted to hear from restaurants and pubs that can cater for us, particularly any within Redditch. Good venues will be promoted in our locations section, and via our newsletter.
Free Food
Fairs
Free Veggie Food Fairs provide a great opportunity for anyone seeking a healthier, more ethical diet, to sample food they have perhaps never tried before. A huge range of veggie/vegan food is displayed buffet style, ready for people to sample whatever takes their fancy! As well as mountains of food, lots of information is displayed including nutrition factsheets, recipes, health magazines and lots more. Such fairs are becoming increasingly popular across the country, and attract hundreds(sometimes thousands) of people, a good percentage of whom are always meat-eaters wanting to try an alternative to their current diet.
We held our first Free Veggie Food Fair at St Stephens Church in October 2005. It was far more successful than we ever imagined it could be, as aspiring veggies/vegans flocked through the doors to sample our feast of free food! Click here to read a full report with photos. We plan to hold food fairs in Redditch as often as possible, and we`ll continue to help out at other fairs across the region. During 2005, members of RVV helped at fairs in Solihull, Coventry and Leamington.
Information stalls are a great way of meeting people and spreading awareness of vegetarian/veganism. We hold stalls at a wide range of events across Redditch and beyond. Everything from council organised family fun days to community learning centre open days and from college fresher fairs to local animal sanctuary open days. We also occasionally hold street stalls in the town centre.
We display a wide range of FREE informative literature that covers health & nutrition, recipes, animal welfare, the environmental cost of the meat/dairy industries - a wealth of information to aid anyone considering changing their diet for the better. For anyone wanting more information, we often sell The Vegan Society`s Animal Free Shopper book and the `L` Plate Vegetarian/Vegan booklets produced by Viva!
On top of all this information, we sometimes offer bite-size food samples such as Redwood`s Vegi-Deli sausages, Fry`s Polony, Granose nut roast, homemade chocolate biscuit cake etc. People always flock to taste our FREE food samples, so much so that we rarely have any left over!
Would you like us to hold a stall at your event?
We are always delighted to hear from local organisations wanting us to hold stalls at special events. Whether it`s indoor or outdoor, daytime or evening, weekday or weekend, we`ll do our best to attend your event. We have our own tables, a gazebo and everything we need to hold a stall wherever you want us to. Please give us as much notice as you can, contact us & we`ll put your event in our diary.
Leafletting
Members of Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans
often raise awareness by distributing colourful, eye-catching
leaflets, usually in conjunction with campaigns run by the
national organisations we represent, ie Viva!, Animal Aid, The Vegetarian
Society or The Vegan
Society. We either hand out
leaflets in the town centre, or we go door to door leafletting
around the local area. Mass leafletting always results in a
surge in the number of people contacting the group concerned
for a free veggie pack, advice or to become a member.
Leafletting
is something that anyone can get involved in, whether young or
old. If you would like to help to educate others in this way,
either contact us to find
out when you can join in, or go out leafletting on your
own/with friends - simply contact one of the national groups
above, who will be happy to send you as many leaflets as you
can use.
Fundraising
Street Collections
National groups such as Animal Aid, Greyhound
Compassion, the Animal Protection
Agency and others, often book street collections
to take place in Redditch Town Centre &
outside local supermarkets. Members of Redditch
Vegetarians & Vegans often help co-ordinate &
take part in these collections. Shaking a tin for
well known animal welfare organisations is always a
good money spinner. Some collectors take along
rescued dogs to help, or even wear an animal costume!! If
you would like to help raise vital funds in
this way, please either keep an eye on our
forthcoming events or contact us, and we`ll let you know when collection dates are
announced.
