Delicious Delights Devoured by Diners at 2 recent Dinners!

A common misconception about vegetarians & vegans is that we often have to `make do` will dull, boring food, particularly if we dine out! This may have been the case many years ago, but the situation has changed enormously. Even here in Redditch, we have restaurants that satisfy the tastebuds of any plant based food connoisseur!!

Our long awaited third group meal out took place at the Barn Thai Restaurant on Unicorn Hill, Redditch Town Centre. Unlike our previous 2 meal venues, the Barn Thai have numerous vegan options on their standard menu. A group of 12 enjoyed a great night out and fab food on Thursday 12th October. Diners chose from a variety of stir fried tofu and vegetable dishes. All the veggie/vegan options provide large portions and they come at very reasonable prices. For dessert, members tucked into some homemade cake, which was made in celebration of a member passing his driving test! We shall definately be returning to this restaurant in future.

On Thursday 2nd November, 6 of our members joined approx 40 others for a fairtrade meal at Archers Restaurant, at Redditch NEW College. The event was organised by the Redditch Trade Justice Network, as a way of building the profile of the campaign to make Redditch a fairtrade town. Various local dignitaries and retailers were invited along and the rest of the diners were the members/supporters of the RTJN and their friends/families.

All of the food was fairly traded, `ethically` sourced and locally produced. Of course, in reality, there is no such thing as ethical where meat is concerned! The vegan option for the main course was Green Lentil and Celery Bake with Mushroom Sauce, served with seasonal potatoes and vegetables. The dessert was Apple Strudel with Coconut Cream. Both were absolutely delicious and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The vegan option was so tempting that it was requested by some of the meat eaters!!

The meal was followed by after dinner speakers who included a representative from the RTJN, the ex mayor of Redditch Diane Thomas and the special guest speaker was John Boyle from the Birmingham Co-Operative Movement, who spoke about Redditch striving for fairtrade town status.
